Once you do turn the street corner, it would be to your benefit to hurry down the street and duck into the building's opening on the right side -- the sooner you can reach the checkpoint, the better, especially on Veteran difficulty. Take cover in the lobby and wait for your fireteam (they are nearly invulnerable) to catch up before proceeding upstairs.
